Solid Rugs

Almost all of them. Solid rugs work where the rest of the room is the visual story — a bold sofa, statement art, a richly colored accent chair. They also work as the calm in a maximalist room, balancing pattern and color elsewhere.

Wool. Construction is hand-tufted for softer pile and accessible pricing, or hand-knotted for the densest, longest-lasting build. Both hold dye evenly, which matters more for solids than for patterned rugs.

Foundational, not boring. The reason solid rugs read "quiet" is the same reason a black turtleneck reads quiet — because the goal is to let what surrounds it shine. (Also: solids hide pet hair better than patterns.)

Vacuum weekly without a beater bar. Address spills immediately — the longer they sit, the more the wool absorbs them. Cold water, mild wool detergent, blot. Every two to three years, professional cleaning to refresh.

For living rooms: under the front legs of the sofa is the minimum; fully under the seating arrangement is better. For dining: large enough that the chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. For bedrooms: extends past the bed by at least 18 inches on each side.

Slightly, in high-traffic areas. Patterns mask normal wear and small stains; solids show them. If the rug is going in a heavy-traffic spot, mid-tones (sand, oat, slate) show wear less than ivory or pure white.
