Flannel is brushed cotton woven to trap warm air against the body — the winter answer to crisp percale (smooth, cool, cotton-poplin-feel) and silky sateen (drapey, smooth). Flannel feels heavier in hand and reads warmer the second you slip into bed. Percale is the year-round cool sleeper's pick; sateen is the year-round elegant pick; flannel is the cold-bedroom and cold-sleeper answer for winter.

Warm enough to swap out the heated mattress pad in cool-bedroom conditions, but not so dense that the fabric traps moisture overnight. The organic European flannel is brushed on both sides — the brushed nap raises softness and air-pocket insulation without the heavy, blanket-like feel of cheaper flannels. Most customers use them October through March in heated homes, or year-round in cool basements and cool bedrooms.

Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle with mild detergent. Skip fabric softener — it coats the brushed nap and reduces both softness and absorbency over time. Tumble dry on low or hang to dry; flannel can shrink at high heat. Iron only if needed and at a low setting. The fabric softens noticeably after the first three to four washes and continues to soften with use.

A small amount of shrinkage (around 3-5%) is normal for natural cotton flannel in the first one or two washes. The fitted sheet is cut with this in mind and accommodates standard US mattress depths after the initial shrink. Pre-washing before the first use is optional but reduces the initial shrink-down on the bed.

Some surface pilling is normal in the first few washes as loose fibers from the brushing process work to the surface — this is expected and reduces over time. The luxury organic European flannel uses a longer-staple cotton than typical flannels, which produces a tighter weave and less pilling overall. Avoid washing flannel with rough garments (denim, towels) to extend the brushed nap.
