ALL YOUR QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

How do I choose the right size planter?

1-2 inches larger in diameter than the plant's nursery pot. Too big and the soil stays wet (root rot risk); too small and the plant gets root-bound. Repot up one size every 1-2 years as the plant grows.

Do planters need drainage?

Yes, for almost all plants. Look for a drainage hole at the bottom and a saucer to catch overflow. For indoor planters without drainage (decorative cachepots), keep the plant in its plastic nursery pot and lift it out to water.

What's the difference between terracotta and ceramic?

Terracotta is unglazed clay — porous, breathable, and great for plants that prefer drier soil (succulents, cacti). Ceramic is glazed clay — sealed, holds moisture longer, better for tropicals and plants that like consistent moisture.

Can outdoor planters stay outside in winter?

Some yes, some no. Frost-resistant terracotta and ceramic can stay out in cold climates; standard terracotta cracks. Check listings for frost-resistance ratings, or bring planters indoors during freezing weather.

How do I keep planters looking clean?

Wipe the outside with a damp cloth occasionally. White mineral deposits from hard water can be removed with diluted vinegar. For terracotta, a stiff brush handles algae or salt buildup.

Should planters match each other?

Mixing material and size works better than matching. Three different ceramic planters in similar tones look more intentional than three identical ones. Vary heights for a layered look.
