Over-the-Calf

Quince's women's over-the-calf socks come in four materials. Cashmere over-the-calf (the elevated dressy option in 100% Grade-A Mongolian cashmere). Trouser socks in fine-knit cotton (the traditional dress sock for office and formal wear). Silk over-the-calf (the lightest dress sock for formal occasions). Merino wool over-the-calf (for cool-weather wear under tall boots).

The terms are largely interchangeable. Over-the-calf — formal/dress sock terminology, emphasizes that the sock extends above the calf muscle. Knee-high — casual terminology for the same height. Trouser socks — specifically the dress sock variety in fine-knit cotton or wool. All three refer to socks that extend to just below the knee, with the cuff sitting above the calf muscle.

Two main reasons. Smooth silhouette under trousers — over-the-calf socks stay smooth under dress trousers and suit pants without bunching at the ankle, which crew and shorter socks can do. Warmth without bulk — over-the-calf socks add a warm layer between knee-high boot tops and pant hems in winter, keeping the lower leg fully covered. For formal dress wear, over-the-calf socks are the proper height.

Machine wash cool on a gentle cycle. Tumble dry low or hang dry. Cashmere and merino wool socks last longest with hand-wash and lay-flat-dry — high heat felts the fibers. Cotton and synthetic-blend socks handle regular machine wash. Wash dark colors with similar tones for the first few washes. Avoid bleach.
