The American Academy of Pediatrics safe-sleep standard for cribs is bare — only a fitted sheet on the mattress, no loose blankets, bumpers, pillows, comforters, or stuffed animals for infants under 12 months. Machine wash cold or warm on a gentle cycle with mild, fragrance-free detergent. Run pieces through an extra rinse cycle to remove all detergent residue before newborn use. Skip fabric softener and bleach. Tumble dry on low. Plan to keep at least 2-3 fitted crib sheets on hand — fitted sheets get washed every 2-3 days during the first six months of newborn life.
