Shams are decorative pillow covers — typically with a flange or finished edge — designed to be displayed on the bed during the day rather than slept on. Pillowcases are functional, with an open end, sized for sleeping pillows. Most beds use both.

Percale is a one-over, one-under weave with a crisp, cool, lightly textured hand — like a freshly pressed shirt. Air moves through the weave easily, which is why percale sleeps cooler than denser weaves like sateen. The matte finish develops a soft-washed feel after a few wash cycles.

Yes. Quince percale uses GOTS-certified organic cotton — grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers and audited at every stage from farm to finished textile. The certification chain means the cotton on your bed has fewer residual chemicals than conventional cotton.

Machine wash cold or warm on a gentle cycle with mild detergent. Skip fabric softener — it coats the cotton fibers and reduces breathability. Tumble dry on low. Long-staple cotton percale softens with use; the crisp hand-feel gives way to a soft-washed feel after a few cycles.

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is a third-party certification confirming the textile has been tested for harmful substances — including residual chemicals from dyes, finishes, and processing — and meets limits well below standard regulatory thresholds. It is the most widely recognized chemical-safety certification for bedding.
