Shams are decorative pillow covers — typically with a flange or finished edge — designed to be displayed on the bed during the day rather than slept on. Pillowcases are functional, with an open end, sized for sleeping pillows. Most beds use both.

Sateen uses a four-over, one-under weave that brings more cotton threads to the surface, producing a smooth, silky drape with a slight sheen. The hand-feel is closer to soft satin than crisp cotton. Sateen traps a little more warmth than percale, which makes it a favorite for cold sleepers and cooler bedrooms.

Yes. Quince sateen bedding uses GOTS-certified organic cotton — grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers and audited at every stage from farm to finished textile. The certification means the cotton has fewer residual chemicals than conventional cotton.

Machine wash cold or warm on a gentle cycle with mild detergent. Skip fabric softener — it coats the cotton fibers and dulls the sateen sheen over time. Tumble dry on low. Sateen pieces hold their sheen and softness for years with gentle care.

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is a third-party certification confirming the textile has been tested for harmful substances — including residual chemicals from dyes, finishes, and processing — and meets limits well below standard regulatory thresholds. It is the most widely recognized chemical-safety certification for bedding.
