ALL YOUR QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

What's the difference between down and recycled fill puffer jackets?

Down fill — from geese or ducks — is lighter per unit of warmth and more compressible than synthetic fill, making down jackets warmer-feeling and packable to smaller sizes. Our down is RDS-certified. Recycled fill (recycled polyester) is a more sustainable option that performs better when wet: unlike down, synthetic fill retains warmth even when damp. For rainy climates, the recycled fill styles are more practical. For dry cold and maximum packability, the down styles are the better choice.

How warm are these puffer jackets — what temperature range do they work for?

Our down puffer jackets perform well in 15°F–45°F (-9°C to 7°C) as the outermost layer. Below 15°F, layering underneath (a cashmere sweater, thermal base layer) extends warmth further. The packable styles are designed for transitional temperatures — 35°F–55°F — as the primary cold layer. Longline styles offer more body coverage and perform slightly warmer at the extremes.

Are these jackets machine washable?

Yes — all puffer styles are machine washable. Use a gentle or delicate cycle, cold water. Important: add two or three clean tennis balls or dryer balls to the dryer — this breaks up the fill and prevents it from clumping as it dries. Tumble dry on low or medium heat until fully dry (damp fill compresses and can create cold spots). With proper drying, the jacket comes out of the wash at full loft and warmth.

Will a black puffer jacket look bulky?

Puffer silhouette and channel construction determine bulk. Our hip-length quilted styles use narrower quilting channels than many competitors, which creates a more streamlined profile. The longline styles have enough length to create a proportional look with the added volume. If you're concerned about bulk, size down one from your usual jacket size — the compression nature of a puffer means a smaller size often fits better than expected.

What outfits work with a black puffer jacket?

The practical answer: everything. Black is the most versatile puffer color because it reads as intentional rather than utilitarian with any outfit underneath — jeans and a cashmere sweater, a midi skirt and boots, wide-leg trousers and a blazer. The longline styles work particularly well over dress-casual outfits. The classic hip-length style is the workhorse for daily wear. The hooded style is slightly more casual in register.

Are these good for travel — do they pack down small?

The packable styles specifically are designed for travel: they compress into their own interior pocket and pack to roughly the size of a water bottle. Down fill compresses more completely than synthetic; packable down styles can fit in a jacket pocket. Standard quilted styles are not designed to pack small but are significantly more compact than a wool coat. For any trip where you need a warm layer without checked-bag bulk, the packable puffer is the right choice.
