ALL YOUR QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

What makes a rug "vintage"?

Generally a rug between 30 and 100 years old that's been used and shows the patina of years — softened pile, mellowed dyes, the occasional asymmetry that comes from being woven by hand rather than machine. Newer than that is "second-hand"; older is "antique."

Are vintage rugs hand-knotted?

Almost always. Vintage wool rugs from the early-to-mid-20th century were made by hand — the technique is part of why they've survived this long. Quince's vintage assortment is hand-knotted wool, the densest and longest-lasting construction available.

How are vintage rugs different from new rugs?

The main difference is character. New rugs come crisp; vintage rugs come softened, with colors that have lived through sunlight, footfall, and time. The wool is also typically more saturated — natural dyes used decades ago developed depth machine-applied dyes can't quite replicate.

Are vintage rugs durable enough for everyday use?

Yes — that's actually their proof of durability. A vintage rug already has decades of use behind it and is still here. For high-traffic rooms, look for tighter pile and minimal repair work in the listing details.

How do I clean a vintage rug?

Vacuum gently without a beater bar (which can stress aged fibers). Spot-clean spills immediately with cold water and mild wool detergent — blot, never rub. Every two to three years, professional wool-rug cleaning protects the patina without bleaching it out.

Why is each Quince vintage rug different?

Because we source them one at a time. Each piece is its own history — the size, color story, and condition all vary by origin. That's the trade-off of vintage: you get character, not consistency. (And inventory turns over fast.)

Do you offer free returns & exchanges?

Yes, rugs may be returned for a full refund or exchange within 365 days of the delivery date. Rugs are subject to a $35 restocking fee for storage and handling.
